The Devil's Arithmetic

 The Devil's Arithmetic by Jane Yolen is 176 pages long. It is about a 12 year old girl named Hannah Stern . She is  Jewish  and during the Passover Seder, she is transports to 1942 Poland, where she becomes Chaya (her name in Hebrew). When she arrives she meets Rivka, a girl around her age. They soon get ready for there uncle's wedding. As soon as they get there, they are captured by the Nazi's and only Hannah knows the horrible things that will happen when they get there. The Nazi's decide to put some of the girls in the gas chamber where they will be choked to death. Rivka is chosen to be killed and Hannah is brave and takes her place along with the others. As soon as the gas chamber kills her she wakes up on the floor in the Passover Seder. Everyone is is around her when she notices the number on her grandmothers arm. She realizes it is the same number Rivka had.

Jake and Lily


Jake and Lily by Jerry Spinelli is 335 pages long and is a great book about an the fight between these twins. Jake and Lily are twins that feel and hear each others thoughts, they can feel when the other needs help or is hurt but this all changes. Jake is tired of it being Jake and Lily and that's all. He wants to be with his friends and doesn't want to be with Lily, he wants to grow up. Lily on the other hand is hurt and feels like her brother, no TWIN is turning his back on her. She thinks that they're connected and is what she calls goomala. It started when they sleep walked to to the train station were they were born on the same night, they're birthday! She thought that she had lost him. On the other hand her grandpa thought that she should get a life. Lily did, one day Sydney and Devon came by. She was now best friends with Sydney. They parted, then the "goomala" came back. Jake felt it, he heard that she was in trouble. In the end they say twins and then you realize that they had it again.

Maniac Magee



Maniac Magee is by Jerry Spinelli and is 184 pages long. Everything started when Magee's parents were killed in a trolley accident orphaning him at age three. After living with his Aunt and Uncle in another town for eight years, he runs away during a school musical performance.After a year of running, Magee finds himself across the river from Bridgeport in Two Mills, Pennsylvania, where his parents died. There, he meets Amanda Beale who accompanies him the rest of the way. Along the way Magee has many exciting adventures. He intercepts a football pass made to local football star James "Hands" Down and  hits home runs off his fastball. Because of these acts, he earned the nickname "Maniac" and became a local legend.
